From Celebration to Tragedy

Today people went from celebrating the Super Bowl victory of the Chiefs, to Tragedy when a mass shooting occurred at Union Station during the event. What should have been a joyous occasion for football fans turned in to a fight for life itself for many. Many will say that all we can do is pray for the victims. But that is just not true.

Our Kansas legislature needs to wake up to the fact that allowing anyone who wants to carry a firearm is just not a good idea. The old “good guy with a gun” idea is bunk. Proper vetting is needed, as well as proper training, before someone should be allowed to own or carry a firearm. In 1878 when Dodge City formed its municipal government, one of its first acts was to ban the carrying of firearms in the city limits. So you can’t argue that Kansas has always allowed it. I am a gun owner, I believe in the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution, but I also believe in firearm safety and in reasonable measures to keep people safe. Now many will say that the shooting at Union Station was gang related or involved under aged suspects. But friends, those under aged suspects did not obtain firearms legally. Someone gave them access to that firearm, someone did not safely secure it and it ended up in the wrong hands. There are many responsible for this tragedy.

Let us pray that it doesn’t happen in your community next.
