Topeka is preparing for a special session of the legislature called by Governor Kelly, to try and fix the broken tax system in Kansas. Can it be done! Maybe, if Republicans are willing to stop giving all the tax breaks to the top 5% and start taking care of those who need it most. The Flat Tax is a scam to give all the breaks to the top and none to the little guy, wile telling the people it is for their benefit. Under the Republican plan, nearly half of the tax savings goes to 5% of Kansans. The middle 20% of earners would bet about a whopping $10 per month in tax saving. How fair is that?
And how sustainable is that? The state surplus would dry up in just a few years time and then it’s back to Brownback Experiment time, with a nearly bankrupt state again. Remember when we couldn’t fix the roads or fund the schools. I don’t think anyone wants to go back to that. Sustaining the Veto of HB 2284 is just good sense.
Here’s hoping that the legislature will stop grandstanding and start to work for the people and give us some true sustainable tax relief. We will find our on June 18th when they all go back to the drawing board.
